The bodies of a woman and her boyfriend were pulled out of a lake in Zhengzhou, Henan province on June 18 after the two had reportedly gotten into a heated dispute and jumped into the water one after the other.
A witness at the scene told police that earlier, he’d seen the two drinking together and arguing by the waterside at Tai Lake. From what he gathered, it sounded like the parents of the two had disapproved of their relationship.
The witness said that the fight escalated, and the female attempted to jump into the water. Her boyfriend tried to stop her but was unsuccessful. After she jumped in, he followed. The two drowned in mere minutes, according to NetEase News.
Police and firemen arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies from the water. They also found property belonging to the deceased, including ID, wallets and a purse.
The couple’s red electric bike was later found near the scene with a few cans of beer stored inside.
Officers identified the male as Liu, a 21-year-old from Anhui. The female was around 20 years old and was from Zhumadian, Henan. Police were still attempting to contact the parents of the deceased as reports were being published.
