A 25-year-old man from Shanghai who suffered severe burns to 88 percent of his body after helping 11 households escape their apartment building when a sudden fire broke out has received 350,000 yuan in donations from netizens for his heroism.
The fire broke out at around 1:45 a.m. on June 16 in Huacao town of Minhang district. Wang Haibin, who lived in room 501 of the No. 14 apartment building, told his family after discovering the fire that he wanted to wake up the other 11 households in the building and help them to safety.
Despite the passageways becoming engulfed in flames, Wang rushed through the building and helped get several families to safety. During the process, he sustained severe burns to the majority of his body and caused serious damage to his lungs.
According to Tencent, a preliminary investigation conducted by members of the Residents’ Association showed that Wang had risked his life to save the residents. He woke them up door-by-door and cleared the way for security guards and firefighters to enter the building.
Even after losing his shoes and glasses, Wang continued to run through the building barefooted to get people to safety.
After over 50 hours of treatment, Wang’s condition has stabilized, but more operations will be needed for him to complete a full recovery.
Wang’s parents are migrant workers from Jiangsu province and so cannot afford the expensive surgeries necessary. With the aid of the local government and generous netizens, Wang has to date received donations totalling over 350,000RMB.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
