The three richest Chinese billionaires were all born in the auspicious Year of the Dragon, a recent report from the high net worth consultancy firm Wealth-X pointed out, adding that the top 10 Chinese billionaires are all self-made men, none of whom were born in the Year of the Sheep.
Taking the number one spot on the top 10 list of Chinese billionaires is Hong Kong business magnate Li Ka-shing. With a net worth of US$30.6 billion, Li’s business empire spans over multiple industries including banking, construction, real estate, retail outlets, hotels shipping, electric power and more. The 86-year-old tycoon was born in 1928, meaning his Chinese zodiac sign is a dragon.
In second place is another Hong Kong real estate tycoon, Lee Shau-kee, who was born in the same year as Li. Lee, chairman of Henderson Land Development, is estimated to have a net worth of US$26.6 billion.
Coming in third place is China’s king of e-commerce, Jack Ma, with a net worth of $26.5 billion. Ma was born in 1964, making him the youngest member of the elite Year of the Dragon Billionaire Club.
The survey also found that none of the top 10 Chinese billionaires were born in the Year of Sheep (aka the Year of the Goat), one of the more undesirable Chinese zodiac signs. It’s believed that babies born in the Year of the Sheep will grow up to be followers rather than leaders, and are more likely to fail at business.
While this can probably all be owed to coincidence (after all, Bill Gates was born in the Year of the Sheep), try not to hold a grudge against your mom if you weren’t one of the lucky ones to pop out in the Year of the Dragon. Aaand maybe start your family planning just ahead of 2024.
