While most people across China were watching dragon boat races and feasting on Zongzi to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival this past weekend, residents in this Hunan town were stripping down to their swim shorts to catch some flying ducks. Um, falling ducks.
The “duck hunt” is held annually in the Tuo River of Fenghuang Ancient Town, Hunan. Essentially, participants dive in the water and scramble to catch the live ducks as they’re thrown from a bridge above. The game attracts dozens of residents who gather near the riverside to cheer on competitors and maybe catch a stray bird.
It gets intense.
Legend has it that Su Shi, a famous poet from the Song Dynasty, got married on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival. Su and his wife were given ducks as a wedding gift, but when several of them fell into the river during the marriage ceremony, guests had to jump into the water to retrieve them.
