A woman in Dezhou, Shandong province threatened to kill herself and jumped into a nearby lake after her husband refused to purchase a handbag she wanted.
According to police, the woman was spotted bobbing around at the southeast side of Mingyue Lake as a crowd of people gathered around her and attempted to persuade her to come ashore, hmting.com reports.
“She’s already been in the cold water for 20 minutes; she’ll get sick if she stays there,” one of the witnesses at the scene, surnamed Zhang, told reporters.
Police arrived at the lake and threw the woman a lifebuoy to help keep her afloat, but she refused to grab onto it.
As soon as officers found the woman’s husband in the crowd, they tried to convince him to comfort his wife. Instead, he shouted at her to get out of the water.
Eventually, the man jumped into the lake, and instead of helping her, he began to smother her. He put his hands around his wife’s throat and shoved her face in the water. Apparently that was when police decided it was time to get into the lake and intervene.
“My husband abuses me all the time at home and it’s not out of the ordinary for him to beat me up like this,” she later told police. “I threatened to commit suicide not just because of the bag but because of all the abuse I’ve been through.”
