One person was left dead and four more injured when the construction site of Shenzhen Subway route no. 7 collapsed yesterday afternoon, forming a massive crater measuring 10 meters wide and 3 meters deep.
The collapse occurred at 4:10 p.m. in the Shenzhen Huanggang Port of Futian district while five construction workers were working inside a cabin.
Two teams of firefighters had to use expansion and cutting tools to rescue five people trapped in narrow spaces. All trapped workers have been rescued, with four of them injured and one declared dead despite attempts at resuscitation.
Two vehicles, which were parked on the roadside, fell into the hole but fortunately, no passenger were inside.
A total of 48 households were evacuated from a nearby apartment as other buildings surrounding the site are being monitored for movement. Emergency teams are now working on filling in the hole.
The cause of the collapse is still not known.
