We’ve seen people smash, burn and, somewhat less effectively, pour Coke on ATMs in an attempt to get their eaten cards out of the machine. Yesterday afternoon, however, a woman at Changchun Railway Station managed to take an ATM apart with her bare hands hoping to get her bank card back. Not sure if we should be impressed by her handiwork or worried by how easily ATMs can be dismantled.
Witnesses at the scene said that the woman began vigorously shaking the machine after complaining that it had taken her card. The cover of the ATM came off after about 10 minutes of her doing this.
The woman then began pulling the machine apart, reportedly using no tools but her own hands.
A witness at the scene, surnamed Sun, told reporters that the woman had approached her to ask for help. She speculated that the lady may be mentally unstable.
Two others at the scene admitted that they initially made fun of the woman by telling her that the card used voice control and would come out if she shouted at it. To their surprise, she began yelling at the ATM to spit her card out. Furious with the joke, nearby passengers decided to call the cops.
Police arrived at the scene at around 3:00 p.m. and the woman was taken to a hospital for further diagnosis.
At around 4:34, a couple of technicians from the bank also arrived at the station, and said they were surprised at how easily the machine had been taken apart by the woman. It was fixed around 10 minutes later, however, a technician reported that they had not discovered any swallowed cards in the machine.
