At least 500 people have been injured after an unknown flammable powder exploded in midair at a recreational water park in Taiwan.
The incident took place at the Formosa Fun Coast at about 8:30 p.m. last night. Video footage showed a massive fireball suddenly engulfing the stage, followed by screaming people running for their lives through the flames.
The explosion occurred during a “Color Play Asia” party put on by a separate company that had rented out space at the park. According to Sohu News the event had attracted around 4,500 participants.
Earlier this morning, the New Taipei Health Bureau released a preliminary list of the injured which indicated that 516 casualties had been sent to 39 hospitals in the area for treatment. Of those injured, 194 were reported to be in critical condition, while 65 people have been discharged.
“We are very regretful (for) this accident that caused injuries to many victims,” Formosa Fun Coast said in a statement. “The most urgent matter currently for us is to handle and assist victims at the scene and work with the fire department.”
The organizers of the event have been taken into custody and the Formosa Water Park shut down indefinitely. An investigation is currently in progress.
