Wuhan’s Central China Normal University once again opened its gymnasium doors for students looking to escape their stuffy dorm rooms and sleep blissfully in the AC-equipped stadium, resulting in what is essentially a massive college slumber party.
By 10:00 p.m. yesterday evening, the gym was flooded with over 1,000 students who arrived with their own mats and tables and spread them out across the hardwood floor, divided in half for males and females.
Chinese dorms typically hold up to four students in one room, and with no air-conditioners installed, the stifling summer months become unbearable for many.
“The dorm is so hot, if I keep staying in that room, I’m probably gonna die from the airless atmosphere,” said one student, who’d arrived at the gym with two roommates by 8:00 p.m. to claim a spot on the crowded floor.
In previous years, the stadium was so jam-packed that students were forced to set up camp outside, just to get a taste of any cold, sweet air that may have seeped through the door.
The Youming Gym has been a cool haven for students since the summer of 2013, but the giant sleepovers will no longer be necessary after July 20, when sections of the dormitories will get their own ACs. Welcome to the 21st century, all. We hope you have a relaxing stay.
