Love was in the air yesterday at a detention center in Mianzhu, Sichuan province, where a couple exchanged vows before an officer with the Civil Affairs department. The bride, Xiao Qing, is a 23-year-old from Deyang, Sichuan. Over the past year, she had written more than 50 love-letters to her groom, Xiao Zhong, who has been detained since 2014. It’s like The Notebook… but of course way better.
The two were photographed holding hands inside an office at the Mianzhu Detention Centre as they said their vows. Xiao Zhong was smiling from ear to ear, while Xiao Qing, still dressed in his prison uniform, shed tears of happiness.
The couple didn’t say much else throughout the ceremony but embraced each other closely the entire time. Shortly after sealing the deal with a kiss, Xiao Zhong was escorted away by police.
According to reports, the couple had been introduced to one another through a mutual friend in 2009 and soon after fell in love. In 2010, they held a wedding party, but Xiao Qing was underage at that time and they weren’t able to get a wedding certificate. Later on, they even had a daughter.
In 2014, Xiao Zhong was arrested. But Xiao Qing never left him and took time to send him hand-written love-letters, suggesting that they should get married. Worried that he might be wasting the woman’s time, Xiao Zhong rejected her wedding proposal. After several consultations with the police, he changed his mind and agreed to tie the knot, officially.
Xiao Zhong is now determined to fight for an earlier release from prison so he can reunite with his family.
