A group of 11 volunteers spent some 500,000 yuan purchasing dogs that had been captured and sent to the Yulin dog meat festival to be slaughtered. The animal lovers rescued 1,381 dogs all together, according to NetEase News.
The rescued dogs have been temporarily transported to a protection shelter in Gaoyou. A volunteer told reporters that around 400 dogs rescued last year are still in good condition at another shelter in the city.
Photos taken last Saturday show the first batch of dogs being transported to the shelter inside temporary kennels.
They were assigned to different kennels in accordance with their species.
One volunteer surnamed Wang expressed concern that the purchases may increase the incentive for dog met vendors to transport more dogs to Yulin, taking advantage of pet lovers’ empathy.
Two weeks ago, a 65-year-old Tianjin woman also spent around 7,000 yuan purchasing over one hundred cats and dogs from sellers at the marketplace.
