A former sanitation worker in Sichuan who’d attempted to make a living by collecting trash took things a tad too far, accumulating over four tons of garbage in his Yibin city home.
“He wanders around the neighborhood every day and picks up trash every time he has a chance,” said one of the man’s neighbors, who added the ex-sanitation worker did not discriminate against any sort of gargabe and even went for cigarette butts “or even more disgusting stuff, like animal feces inside a plastic bag.”
Neighbors who could no longer tolerate the odors wafting from the man’s home had no choice but to call community workers to deal with the mess.
Twenty social workers from the local Yangguang Garden helped to clean up the man’s home, although it took tremendous effort. Some nearby residents volunteered to help as well, changing shifts every 30 minutes to take a breather.
Three people fainted as a result of the horrible stench, while another threw up immediately after stepping into the house. The workers started at 7:30 in the morning and finished after a full 12 hours.
The 62-year-old trash collector, surnamed Zheng, said that the at-home refuse collection business was his only means of supporting his family. His wife suffers from epilepsy and their adopted daughter was born blind and can’t find a job.
“I need to feed my family. Ever since I retired, we have no income; we have to figure a way out,” said Zheng.
The community indicated there was no persuading Zheng and his family to give up garbage collecting.
