A mother in Yiwu, Zhejiang province who refused to break open the window of her BMW as her three-year-old son was locked inside has been slammed by web users after it was reported that she didn’t want to pay for the repair work.
Crowds gathered around the car as the child was seen frantically clawing at the window and crying within. Firefighters arrived at the scene and were prepared to break open the window, but the mother insisted on waiting for a locksmith, as she didn’t want to fork out cash for repair work.
According to Sina News, the three-year-old boy was left in the car while his parents went out to buy a few things. The child was unable to open the door of the BMW when in accidentally locked itself, with no windows left open.
Policemen and firemen tried to convince the woman to let them break the car window, but she remained reluctant. Fearing for the boy’s safety in the sweltering heat, a fireman went ahead and smashed open the glass anyways.
The story follows similar cases out of China that ended in tragedy. On June 27, a four-year-old boy from Hunan died from heat exhaustion after his parents forgot him in the back of a stuffy car. Days ago, a three-year-old girl in Shandong died after her nursery school principal left her in a boiling hot car for nine hours.
Online, web users grilled the mother, who some said was unfit to have a child.
“The mother shouldn’t have left her kid in the car in the first place. Even if the car did accidentally lock itself,” one netizen said.
Another added: “It looks like the car is her real son.”
