A 100-year-old woman in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province got her Literacy Certificate within 10 days after she decided she wanted to learn how to read and write.
Zhao Shun never went to school. Despite her ripe age, she could only read her own name, and her illiteracy had always haunted her, her son said. After learning that a literacy class had opened in the Sanbao community, she decided to enroll in a 10-day course.
The centenarian, who used to sell vegetables for a living, attended class for two hours a day, 10 days straight. She memorized over 100 characters, enough to pass her exam and achieve her literacy diploma.
“Mom knows how hard life can be when you are illiterate,” Zhao’s eldest son, who has a bachelor’s degree, told reporters. “That’s why she insisted that we should get our education despite the economic deficiency in our family.”
