An eight-year-old girl in Guilin, Guangxi has made headlines due to a rare disease which has caused her to grow dense, long hair all over her body, including her face, since she was born.
Xiao Ling’s rare syndrome is known as Hirsutism or Hypertrichosis, and is also called Werewolf Syndrome. It is a kind of hereditary throwback, seen as a medical sign to a more serious medical condition, rather than a disease.
While there is no cure for the syndrome so far, some experts suggest she should undergo a permanent hair removal procedure done by laser.
However, Xiao Ling has not done it yet as her family cannot afford the tens of thousands yuan of the procedural cost.
Only 34 such cases have been adequately documented since the middle ages. One of the most recognizable cases might be Fedor Jeftichew, also known as Jojo the Dog-faced boy, who toured as a sideshow performer in the 1800s.
