A “sky restaurant” at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Centre launched its latest mid-air eating experience on July 22. For a cool 8,888 RMB, brave customers can enjoy a meal while dangling from a dining room in the air… a bargain!
According to Sina News, the restaurant is the first of its kind to open in Kunming. As seen from the photos, there are no railings on the sides of the suspended room. The roof and the floor of the restaurant are supported by iron bars and transparent glass, and the dining table and five seats on both sides are firmly mounted onto the floor. The seats also came with seat belts.
The sky restaurant is 4.5 meters long, 3 meters wide and 2.5 meters tall, weighing about 3 tons in total. With the addition of eight customers, a chef and a waiter, the whole “restaurant” weighs about 4.5 tons. It hangs 30 meters above the ground by a 40-meter tall crane which weighs about 32 tons.
At around 10:00 a.m. every morning, staff start setting the table and place the already-cooked food and drinks on it. After customers take their seats at around 11:30 a.m., the restaurant “takes off”.
Apparently, the restaurant is launching four “mid-air dining experiences” from July 23 to 26, with 32 seats on offer. A seat in the sky-high eating lounge will cost diners 8,888 RMB a pop, and customers are given eight dishes, including caviar, truffles, foie gras and ‘Ganba’ mushrooms from Yunnan.
For those who find the dining experience a bit on the steep side, we recommend booking a flight as a cheaper alternative. You still get to enjoy pre-cooked food in the air, it’s equally nerve-rattling in light of recent Asian airline disasters and you even get to travel to another place.
