Art lovers—as well as people in general—were appalled by a sculpture depicting a fallen angel in gruesome detail that was unveiled in Beijing earlier this week.
The artwork was created by two controversial Beijing artists, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, who are renowned for working with extreme materials such as human fat tissue, live animals and baby cadavers to deal with serious issues like perception, death and the human condition. Fortunately, no baby parts were used for this piece.
According to People’s Daily, their latest work “Angel”, which features a very old woman with enormous featherless wings collapsed on the ground, is made of silica gel, fiberglass, stainless steel and woven mesh.
The duo explained that the work illustrates the tension and transition between surrealism and realism, between the supernatural and the mundane. The angel has become completely powerless, unable to do God’s will or to help others.
So, what do you guys think? Interesting project that we can all use to learn more about ourselves or should we kill it with fire?
