A devious elderly man in Sichuan purposefully fell off his bicycle at an intersection on Thursday and then tried to blame the considerate student who kindly stopped to check on him.
However, the senior’s dastardly plan was foiled by this newfangled invention called the “surveillance camera” and the case has since sparked considerable outrage online with netizens wishing the old man an early death.
Local police responded quickly to the incident and checked the surveillance footage, which clearly showed the old-timer falling off his bike and then a student in a red short-sleeved shirt riding by seconds later and stopping to check if the old man was hurt.
Police said they gave the old man a lesson and then set him free. Though, it seems like the most valuable lesson he should have learned in this instance is to avoid intersections with surveillance cameras.
Not surprisingly, in a country where many hesitate to act to help strangers because of just this kind of scam, the old man has become public enemy number one online with many netizens hoping he hurries up and just dies.
“How could this elderly man possibly face his own offspring after that?” wondered one netizen from Henan.
Another web user from Tianjin was not pleased with how the police handled the case, “Those who profane morality should be severely punished.”
A netizen from Beijing looked to history to explain the elderly man’s behavior. “Do you remember the Red Guards? Do you know why all old people nowadays like to blackmail? It’s because those hoodlums have all become old!”
“The next time the old man tries this trick, I hope it kills him,” wrote another web user from Hebei.
