A 30-year-old woman was killed on Sunday after she fell into a gap that suddenly appeared at the upper end of an escalator at a department store in Jingzhou city, Hubei province.
Surveillance footage captured the moment Xiang Liujuan stepped off the escalator with her two-year-old son when the footplate collapsed beneath them. Xiang managed to push her son up to safety and he was pulled away by a shopping assistant.
Another mall employee attempted to lift Xiang out of the gap, but she was tragically pulled into the machinery as her young child looked on.
The woman was reportedly shopping with her husband at the time. He was walking behind Xiang and their son but had not yet made it to the elevator on the fifth floor.
Workers retrieved the woman’s body after four hours. It’s believed that loose screws on the footplate caused the accident.
