The latest contender for Dad of the Year comes from the Longhua New Area district of Shenzhen, where a man reportedly used his young child as leverage to negotiate the return of his motorbike, which was confiscated by traffic police on Saturday.
The father, surnamed Li, brought his nine-year-old son to the police station on Sunday and asked for his bike to be returned. When police refused, he decided to leave the boy there ‘in protest’, according to Shenzhen Daily.
The kid, called Yiyi, was seen wandering around the station later that day. He told police that his father had brought him and told him to “stay for a few days”, assuming he’d be in good hands with police. Li refused to come back and get his son even after police contacted him.
“I left my son there because I can barely make a living without my motorbike,” the single father later explained. “I wanted to push the traffic police a little bit and maybe they would return the motorbike to me.”
Li returned to the police station at around 10:00 p.m. that night, by which time the boy had already been sent to the city’s juvenile protection center.
Li may face a fine and detention for his attempt to use his own child as a bargaining chip. It’s unclear now whether the boy will be taken from him as well.
