Yet another escalator accident has made headlines in China, this time at the Sun Square Mall in Wuzhou, Guangxi, where a one-year-old toddler was dragged into one of the moving staircases.
According to local media, the toddler tripped and fell on the escalator, causing his left arm to be dragged into the machinery. A shopkeeper at the mall told reporters that the toddler was there with his grandmother, and believed that the incident was not caused by the problems with the escalator, but rather the negligence of the child’s grandmother.
Firemen and emergency rescue personnel arrived at the scene shortly. In order to remove the child’s arm, firemen used hydraulic expansion pliers and crowbars to take apart the escalator.
When the child was finally freed from the machinery, his left arm appeared to be fractured and his fingers were black and bloody. He was sent to the Wuzhou Red Cross Hospital immediately.
Following an increasing number of reports on escalator accidents, officials from the Wuzhou fire station reminded citizens to be vigilant when taking the escalator. They also urged parents to keep a close eye on their children and to stop them from playing on an escalator, so as to prevent similar tragedies from happening.
