A man was caught attempting to sell his newborn baby girl after he’d transported the child in a suitcase to a hotel in Yuzhou, Henan province on Sunday.
The middle-aged man, surnamed Ding, hid the three-day old infant in the luggage and went to the hotel to meet a woman surnamed Zhao at around 7:00 p.m. with the intention of selling the newborn, Shanghai Daily reports.
Hotel staff heard the baby crying from inside the suitcase and stopped the pair. Police arrived at the scene and found the child inside, unharmed. She was sent to a hospital and the two suspects were detained.
Ding explained that the newborn’s mother was mentally ill, and he thought she wouldn’t be able to raise the child.
Last week in Henan’s Qifeng county, a man and woman were sentenced to five and three years in prison respectively for selling their baby boy because they feared he would be too expensive, Xinhua reports. The couple sold the infant for 100,000 yuan.
