Celebrity TV host Bi Fujian has been confirmed to have left the Chinese broadcaster CCTV, three months after he was caught on camera bad-mouthing Chairman Mao Zedong at a private dinner, Duowei News reports. He had been suspended from his show since the footage surfaced on the web in April.
In the video, which went viral online after being “leaked” by an anonymous person, Bi was seen singing a tune from the 1958 revolutionary opera Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, adding in his own sarcastic commentary about the suffering caused under Mao’s leadership. At one point, he even called the chairman an ‘old son of a bitch’, which obviously didn’t sit well with legions of Mao loyalists and state media.
Following the incident, Bi apologized in a post to his Weibo account, saying that his personal speech had “a serious detrimental impact” on society.
“As a public figure, I shall learn a lesson from this incident, and exercise strict self-discipline and restraint,” he added.
Earlier in May, reports from Beijing said CCTV initially planned on downplaying the incident, but was faced with strong opposition from leftists.
It is now confirmed that Bi has indeed left CCTV.
