A 21-year-old woman was crushed to death in an elevator accident in Zhejiang this morning.
The report follows two other machinery-related accidents in China in the past week, including the tragic case of a mother who was swallowed up by an escalator in Hubei on Sunday and a Guangxi toddler who was injured in an escalator accident just two days later.
The woman was reportedly entering the elevator from the 16th floor of a residential estate in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province when the elevator suddenly ascended, leaving her head stuck inside the uprising elevator while her body was still dangling outside.
Firefighters said the woman’s head was trapped on the 17th floor while her body was on the 16th floor. The woman showed no signs of life when they got her out, and was later pronounced dead in the hospital.
The two elevators in the estate have since been shut down. A resident indicated that the complex, established in the 90s, had often encountered problems with the elevators, and said that sometimes the doors wouldn’t even close.
Shortly before the accident, the management with the estate issued a notice stating that they repaired the elevators just at the end of last year.
