Seven people, including three children, were injured when a knife-wielding man began randomly attacking people at a market in Guangzhou on the morning of July 29, at one point even holding a young girl hostage.
The man, aged 50, was seen wandering about and yelling near the Tuhua Market in the city’s Haizhu district at around 8:00 a.m., but was ignored by onlookers.
Not even an hour later, he took out a knife and slashed the owner of a breakfast shop, SCMP reports, citing Southern Metropolis News.
He then turned his weapon on a grandmother and her grandson, who’d been eating at the shop.
The grandmother was cut on her neck, while the child sustained serious knife wounds on his face.
“I saw the child who suffered the most serious injury when the attacker slashed right on his forehead and sliced down to the corner of his eye. His grandmother who was holding the toddler literally froze,” one witness was quoted as saying in the report.
Witnesses said they had never seen the man, who was apprehended after taking a seven-year-old girl hostage for about 10 minutes.
