Flooding triggered by torrential rain swept away nine tourists at a village in Xi’an, Shaanxi province yesterday as the area received record levels of downpour. Five people have been confirmed dead and four more remain missing.
The nine people were among 13 others swept up by the flooding as they were dining at a riverside restaurant in the Xiaoyuhe village of the Qinling Mountains at around 5:15 p.m. Safety personnel rushed to the scene and rescued four of them, Xinhua reports, citing local police.
Authorities issued a yellow alert about an hour ahead of the incident and warned about rain-triggered landslides and floods in the area.
The Xi’an Municipal Meteorological Observatory recorded 145.7mm of rain in the Xiaoyuhe village yesterday, the highest in the past 30 years.
Around 50 villagers and tourists were relocated to a safer location as rescuers continue to search for the missing.
