China has found itself tangled up in yet another weird plagiarism scandal, this time involving one of its 2022 Winter Olympics songs and the animated Disney princess flick Frozen.
The tune in question, “Ice Dancing”, was one of 10 promotional anthems used in Beijing’s bid for the 2022 Winter Games. It wasn’t until Friday, when the city won the bid, that it became the subject of criticism.
Web users noticed that the song, recorded by mainland singers Sun Nan and Tan Jing, sounds extremely similar to “Let it Go”, a popular track from the Disney animated blockbuster. Allegations that the Olympics theme song is merely a grade-A knockoff emerged last weekend in an an article published by the Chinese business magazine Caijing, but it has since been removed.
Fortunately, we have access to the World Wide Web, where both songs can be easily found and compared. Take a listen to each tune (and a netizen-made mashup of the two) and decide for yourself.
