A newborn baby girl who was abandoned in a Beijing public bathroom was saved by police and is now being treated in the hospital.
Police received a call after passerby said they heard a baby crying in the bathroom, located in the capital’s Xicheng district. Upon arriving, officers found the newborn stuck in the toilet sewer, People’s Daily reports.
“The baby’s head was upside down and the whole body has fallen into the sewer. I could vaguely [see] the baby’s feet from the side,” officer Qian Feng said.
Fearing they wouldn’t have enough time to cut the pipe, Qian managed to carefully pull the baby’s body out using his bare hands. She didn’t seem to sustain any serious injuries in the rescue effort and is now receiving treatment in a local hospital.
Because blood was detected at the site, it’s speculated that the baby had been abandoned by the mother after she gave birth in the toilet, a case that isn’t entirely uncommon in China.
Last year, a woman gave birth to a baby boy in the bathroom of a train and abandoned him next to the toilet. In December, dramatic footage showing firefighters rescuing a baby left to die at a public toilet in Shaanxi went viral online.
