You know a court case has reached extraordinary levels of ridiculousness when it’s landed halfway across the world on the writers’ desk at Conan. In an episode that aired yesterday, the TBS talk show host Conan O’Brien joked about the conviction of a Hong Kong woman who was jailed for assaulting a police officer with her breast.
At the center of the case is Ng Lai-ying, 30, who claimed that Chief Inspector Chan Ka-po had touched her breast during a protest against parallel trading on March 1.
Deputy Magistrate Michael Chan Pik-kiu of Tuen Mun Court, however, accused the woman of “using her female identity to trump up the allegation” that she was molested, and sentenced her to three months and 15 days in prison for assaulting the officer using her breast.
The verdict has been widely protested across Hong Kong, and hundreds of bra-clad protestors gathered outside police headquarters in the Wan Chai district on Sunday to declare that a “breast is not a weapon”.
