Two men were arrested after confessing to the murder of a 15-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother at a village in Bijie city, Guizhou province.
The siblings, whose father worked in another city and whose mother had died, were found stabbed to death in their Zhongxin village home on Tuesday.
Police said that the suspects, aged 20 and 17, admitted to sexually assaulting the girl before killing her and her brother with “edged tools”, according to SCMP, citing the Beijing Youth Daily. It was also revealed that the female victim had been sexually assaulted last year by a 60-year-old neighbor who paid the family 30,000 yuan to keep quiet.
This recent case follows a string of incidents involving “left behind” children in rural China, who are more likely to fall victim to trafficking, murder, suicide and other tragedies.
In June, four siblings who’d been abandoned at their home in Guizhou committed suicide by drinking pesticide.
