A 24-year-old man in Xi’an was spotted yesterday arranging lychees on a busy downtown overpass in a romantic bid to propose to his girlfriend. Let’s see how that went.
At 11:30 a.m., the Romeo along with some helpful friends squatted down in the middle of the footbridge and painstakingly laid out the small fruits to form the shape of two hearts pierced by Cupid’s arrow and the word “Love.” The strange scene attracted quite a few onlookers.
According to the man surnamed Dong, this was a surprise proposal he had been planning for quite some time.
“I’m very excited! My happiness will depend on if she accepts my proposal or not, but I’m confident that she will!” Dong told local reporters on the scene.
After Dong’s 23-year-old sweetheart finally showed up, he knelt down in front of her and began to propose: “My dearest, I don’t have a house, a car or a lot of money, but I have true love for you. I can use it to provide you with happiness. Will you marry me?”
The woman was stunned and without knowing what to say she ate one of the lychees and abruptly fled the scene.
Dong told reporters that he and his girlfriend have been together for three years. He graduated from university and now works in a company. She loves eating lychee, so he decided to prepare an elaborate lychee-themed proposal to woo her. The out-of-season fruit cost him almost 2,000 RMB all together.
“She said that we’re too young to marry,” Dong lamented. “My heart is bitter, but I will get her back. We are meant to be together.”
Perhaps, he just needs to try a little harder next time, like this humble plumber did.
