A four-year-old boy died in Shanghai on Tuesday after accidentally falling into a well at a construction site.
At 6 p.m., Tong Tong along with his dad, mom and uncle came to deliver goods to a local grocery store at Nanbanfu road. Tong Tong’s dad parked the car around five meters away from the shop and the three adults started unloading the goods and carrying them into the store. Tong Tong played alone on the roadside while waiting for the adults. Shortly afterwards, the boy began to suddenly scream, Sina News reports.
According to a witness, Tong Tong began jumping on a metal plate covering the well, but it broke and the boy plunged into the well. “His father immediately jumped into the well to try to save him, but the boy sank down too fast,” the witness said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene. An hour later, the boy’s body was salvaged from five meters deep in the well. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at 7:15 p.m.
A local resident told reporters that construction work had been carrying on at the site for around three years.
“After the accident, all of the wells were fixed and security guardrails and warning signs appeared overnight,” remarked another local resident. “But the warning signs have gone missing before.”
