An Australian tourist was arrested by police in Hong Kong yesterday morning after he attacked the driver of a minibus and took it on a 4.6km joyride before ditching it at an intersection.
Police say the tourist, identified as Patrick, was intoxicated when he approached a line of buses in Causeway Bay at around 4:50 a.m. He pushed open the doors of the first minibus, which was getting ready to depart, and proceeded to grab the driver by the neck.
Th 64-year-old driver got off the bus and watched as the Aussie drove off with his vehicle. He said the man was “strong-looking” and smelled of alcohol, Coconuts Hong Kong reported.
Police found the stolen minibus abandoned at an intersection some 4.6km away at around 7:00 a.m. The vehicle had seemingly seen hard times in those two hours, as one of its headlights had been broken as well as a window. Patrick, meanwhile, was passed out just meters away.
He took a breathalyzer test but failed. He was arrested on suspicion of theft, assault and refusing to give a blood sample then taken to a hospital in Wan Chai for his injuries. As of last night, he hadn’t been granted bail, SCMP said, most likely because he was still sleeping it off.
