A 20-year-old inmate was captured less than 24 hours after he escaped a juvenile prison by scaling the electric fence and jumping over barbed wire in Harbin, Heilongjiang province on Sunday.
Police and paramilitary police officers launched a manhunt after the inmate, Zhang Yunming, was reported missing at around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Zhang was captured by 4:40 p.m. the next day, Xinhua said.
What’s most surprising, however, is that the inmate managed to get over the prison’s surrounding electric fence and barbed wire, sustaining only minor leg injuries.
While prison breaks are by no means common in China, a highly-publicized jail escape had been reported out of Heilongjiang province last year as well. Three inmates were captured by police after they escaped a detention center outside of Harbin by killing a guard on duty and wearing police jackets and shirts to get through the gates.
