Inspiring to some, tragic to others, photos of a 69-year old amputee street cleaner in Chengdu have gone viral on Chinese social media.
Deng Xianguo had half of his leg amputated at the age of 19 due to an accident. He has been sweeping the streets on crutches for the past seven years and reportedly gets a lot of pleasure from his work.
“I like this job so much because I can earn money and am able to pay my grandchildren’s tuition fees and work out at the same time,” Deng was quoted as saying in a West China Metropolis Daily report.
Deng begins his work, on a 300m long street where he collects bins and picks up cigarette butts etc, bright and early at 5:00 a.m.
The publicity from state media has lead some people visiting him in person, delivering donations of money and food.
