A two-year-old boy was tragically run down by a car near a Zhengzhou shopping mall yesterday. His mom had been too busy playing around with her smartphone to watch over him.
The boy was hit by a white SUV just inside a mall parking lot, Tencent News reports.
According to witnesses, he was playing on the sidewalk while his mother was playing on her phone. She was too focused on her mobile device to notice that her son had strayed in front of a vehicle.
The toddler was rushed to the hospital, but didn’t make it.
The driver, surnamed Wang, has been taken into custody by police.
Of course, this isn’t the first tragedy involving smartphones in China. Just last week, a 3-year-old Zhejiang girl was killed after falling from the third floor of an apartment building while her father was too immersed in a game on his smartphone to watch over her.
In June, a young woman in Sichuan had to be rescued by firefighters after her leg slipped through a storm drain cover as she was busy fiddling around with her cell phone.
In May, a female pedestrian who was using her mobile phone while crossing the road at an intersection in Zhongshan, Guangdong province was killed after being crushed by two large trucks.
