An infant born with both male and female genitals was recently discovered at a park in Shandong province after having been abandoned there.
The baby was found by an elderly man in the city of Zibo. The man also found a plastic bag with a blanket, some clothing and cash next to the infant, SCMP reports.
The child was taken to a hospital and was found to have a number of melanin spots, but is in good health.
Many infants abandoned or left in baby hatches are found to have health issues. In May, a baby born with a cleft lip was discovered in the wilderness in Guangxi after having been buried partially underground for eight days and nights.
Around one in every 2,000 babies is believed to be born intersex, according to the Intersex Society of North America. In many cases, doctors perform gender reassignment surgery when the child is still an infant, although this has proven to be very controversial.
