A dog took over the role as mother for four Siberian tiger cubs born at the Qiqihar Lonza Botanical Garden and Zoo in Heilongjiang province on August 16.
This was the first time a Siberian tiger has given birth to four cubs at the zoo, and as is sometimes the fate of new mom tigers, this one was kind of unable to fulfill her maternal duties.
According to People’s Daily, the cubs were rejected by their mother due to a lack of milk, so the zoo found a dog who’d recently given birth to nurse them instead.
Apparently dog’s milk is very similar to tiger milk, so this is common practice.
The Siberian tiger cubs must be fed 12 times a day for around three to four months until they can start eating solid foods.
Welcome to motherhood.
