Former international football player Gao Feng was sentenced to seven months in prison and given a one-year suspension at a local court yesterday, around five months after he and three others assaulted a Shanghai cab driver at the end of a long night out.
Gao and three others, including TV host Qiu Qiming, actor Ni Yuan and scriptwriter He Mu, were convicted at the Huangpu District People’s Court. The accomplices were all given suspended prison terms of seven or eight months, Shanghai Daily reports, and the four were ordered to pay the taxi driver compensation of 500,000 yuan.
The high-profile incident took place in the early hours of the morning on March 9. The group reportedly beat cab driver Zhao Gun outside the Jin Jiang Tower hotel after leaving a party in the building at around 5:23 a.m.
Apparently, the dispute began when the cab driver refused to take Gao’s fare, and things turned violent from there. Zhao was left lying on the sidewalk with a fractured eye socket and battered nose and shoulder.
Previous Xinhua reports said that Gao and Ni’s urine samples tested posted for crystal meth, and during police interrogation they had confessed to taking the drug that night.
Gao had been in Shanghai to appear on the TV program “Dancing with the Stars”.
