Photos and video of two traffic cops getting down on their knees to ask a man and his mother to please, please stop complaining about getting a ticket for drunk driving have been circulating around Weibo recently.
According to the Handan traffic police station, the incident took place at around 7:48 a.m. Friday morning at the Hanwu Bridge in Handan, Henan province. Two other traffic officers recorded the scene using a smartphone and police recorder.
The male driver named Feng Dong was stopped for driving under the influence and his mother, the middle-aged woman in the picture, knelt down to beg the officers for mercy for her son. Feng and his mommy spent more than an hour pleading with traffic cops by kneeling down on the street, grabbing the officer’s legs, lying down in the middle of the road and threatening to jump in front of passing cars.
To try and stop their whining, two of the traffic officers also went down on their knees to explain to the mother and her son about the importance of traffic rules, and you know, not driving drunk.
According to recent posts on Weibo, Feng has been punished with a fine of 1,000RMB and he is banned from driving for six months.
Naturally, netizens had a few comments to make on the matter.
One user named 欧阳恋天 wrote, “Drunk driving deserves severe punishment. There’s no room for discussion on his detention.”
“This is a serious issue as the dignity of law is being flagrantly abused,” remarked 胖头鱼头王.
Another user who identifies as a traffic cop himself added, “In my opinion, this matter was the result of the worsening environment for law enforcement. If the officers can’t protect themselves how can they protect others?”
