Border police in Guangxi seized 620 live wild turtles and tortoises from a shipment of frozen seafood being sent from Vietnam on August 24.
The officials were alerted to the live sea creatures after detecting ‘crawling sounds’ during inspection, the Associated Press reports. Over 500 of them are considered endangered species, including Indochinese box turtles and elongated tortoises.
The shipment was being sent to Guangdong, where turtle meat is considered a delicacy.
Last September, over 450 dead pangolins, or scaly anteaters, were seized in Guangdong. The creatures’ armor is believed to cure cancer and other ailments according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.
