Wave-watchers were swept off the ground as a monster seawall broke on the flood barrier of the Qiantang River in Zhejiang province yesterday.
Hundreds of people regularly gather at the river in Haining city to watch its famous tidal bore, which can reach up to nine meters in height and travel at speeds close to 40 kilometers per hour.
Spectators were ‘taken by surprise’ when a tidal bore plowed them over yesterday. Some managed to flee before getting swallowed up by the water, while others were seriously injured at the scene.
“It started as a white line, and it sounded like thousands of horses running when the waves were approaching,” one tourist was quoted as saying.
On Sunday, four people were reportedly washed away by a wave that rolled over the Qiantang riverbank, the youngest of them being just 17 years old.
