A man in Shanghai cut off his wife’s hand with a cleaver after accusing her of having an affair, Shanghai Daily reports.
The victim, a 29-year-old mother surnamed Qing, was admitted to the 455 Hospital in Changning district on Sunday with her left hand severed at the wrist.
Qing explained in the report that she moved away from home for work in January, and her husband, surnamed Chen, had constantly accused her of having affairs thereafter. He sent her text messages threatening to hurt her, including one that read: “I’ll leave you disabled so that nobody will want you”.
While she’d wanted to divorce him, others advised her to stay with him for the sake of their three-year-old son, who lives with Chen’s parents in Sichuan province, Qing said.
She claims that Chen kidnapped her from the factory she works at in Suzhou on Saturday and took her to an apartment in Pudong, Shanghai.
While several people were present she was taken away from work, nobody intervened and brushed it off as a “domestic” issue, Qing’s aunt said in the report.
After the two got into a heated dispute, Chen “slashed off the woman’s left hand and also continued on to chop off several fingers from the bloody palm,” Shanghai Daily said.
Doctors attempted to carry out reattachment surgery for her hand just before midnight on Sunday but were unsuccessful.
Qing’s mother passed away and her father is now struggling to raise money for her medical treatment.
This isn’ the first time a spouse’s jealous rage has escalated to gruesome levels. Last year, a woman in Fuzhou cut off her husband’s penis and flushed it down the toilet because she suspected he was having an affair.
In February 2013, a Shanghai woman also cut off her boyfriend’s manhood in his sleep over fears that he was going to break up with her.
