The story of a British man and a Taiwanese woman with cerebral palsy who got married and opened up a bread shop together has lit up social media sites and reminded even the most cold-hearted among us that true love exists. The bread they sell in their bakery has been affectionately called “love bread”, and is now extremely popular among local residents in Shigang district.
Liu Yifang, who also goes by the name Yvonne, has lived with cerebral palsy since birth. While her speaking ability has been affected, her cognitive development has not.
“I consider myself a healthy, average person, so I’m not afraid of hardships,” said Liu, who is in her early 30s.
According to Da-Ai TV, Liu graduated from National Taiwan University. She met her husband Peter, who’s 25 years older than her, through a dating website years ago.
Peter, 60, is a former engineer who lived in Malta before relocating to Taichuang. He said he was deeply attracted to Liu’s strong will and boldness.
“She’s very, very intelligent. She’s more intelligent than me,” Peter told reporters. “Sometimes she thinks quicker than me and makes decisions off her own back”.
After the two met, Peter invited Liu to travel with him in Malta. Upon receiving approval from her parents, Liu went off on her own to meet Peter and the two lovebirds later tied the knot there, Liberty Times Net reports.
After living in Malta for two years, Liu felt homesick, so Peter decided to quit his job and move back with her to Taiwan.
The two read books about bread-making and started a bakery of their own three years ago. Peter and Liu’s “love bread”, as well as their love story, have become widely known among local residents.
Liu’s dad, Liu Chunrong, said he believes that love is predestined and told reporters that he’s grown fond of his son-in-law, who is only five years younger than he is.
“I know that Yvonne needs me, so regardless of any difficulties or upsets we do have it’s pushed on and we get on with things,” Peter said.
The “love bread” is usually sold out within an hour after Peter and Liu open their store. After that, they go home and customers’ orders.
