Incoming students at Jinan University in Shandong province saw a grim start to the school year when one of their fellow classmates was hit and killed by a door to an access tunnel that fell from above as she was registering for her courses.
The 18-year-old student, identified by the surname Rong, died instantly when the heavy material fell from a height of 20 meters and landed on her head.
The student’s mother also had her leg crushed by the falling object, CCTV News reports, citing the local Jinan Times.
“The poor girl died instantly and her mother looked like she fainted. The top of the building was probably under construction and workers had to remove the cover of the tunnel to go outside,” one witness said in the report.
Netizens have placed blame on the university for failing to warn students about construction above. The case is still being investigated.
In May, a driver was lucky to be alive after a piece of scaffolding impaled his dashboard window at a construction site in Wuhan.
However, not only at construction zones should passersby be should beware of falling objects. Last month, a 10-year-old boy in Sichuan province was killed when a large coin-shaped sculpture broke and landed on top of him at a public park.
