One person was left dead and several others injured after a knife attack in Beijing’s Chaoyang district this past Tuesday.
The attacker, a 29 year-old man from Heilongjiang surnamed Song, resisted arrest and was shot by police, Sina news reports. Song was only wounded by the gunshot and all casualties were delivered to the hospital, but so far there is no further news on their conditions.
There has been a recent spate of stabbing incidents China, setting Chinese citizens as well as foreigners on high alert. Just last month, a man who said he ‘hated Americans’ attacked a foreign man and his wife with a sword in Beijing’s crowded Sanlitun district in broad daylight. The woman, a Chinese national, was taken the the hospital and later pronounced dead.
Sina News refers to official reports on the rarity of violent crimes in China, and UN statistics from 2013 suggest that to be true. South America and South Africa are ranked the most homicidal regions of the world, with China considered equally as safe as Europe, Canada and Australia.
