An 80-year-old amateur fashion designer from Sichuan has made a giant splash in the online art scene after fiercely showing off a white dress of his own design to the world.
According to Sichuan News, Liao Dezhong has designed and made more than 10 garments. This year, a long white dress was his stand out creation, while last year a cotton print dress was his most eye-catching design.
Liao was originally inspired to make additional pockets and zippers into his own homemade outfits after his cellphone was stolen by a pickpocket.
Liao’s white dress has five pockets all together. “I can put my cellphone inside the middle one, keep my keys in the one on the right, put cigarettes into the one on the left and keep some money in the upper two pockets,” he explains, rejecting the need for a matching purse.
He said that each piece cost less than 60 yuan to make. “Three meters of cloth costs around 42 yuan while the tailoring and five zippers costs an extra 10 yuan,” he told reporters, adding that he would design a red outfit next year.
Liao and his late wife had five sons and daughters. Their oldest daughter died from cancer in her late 40s and their oldest son works in another city, while the other three children are all married and living in Dazhou city.
He told reporters that he visits a popular local street almost every day to meet other senior citizens and show off his latest creations. Afterwards, he drops by to visit his granddaughter on the way home.
“My dad was a carpenter when he was young and he made clothes hangers and wardrobes,” said his youngest son Liao Qianjie. “He has been displaying has creations on the streets since last year and they’ve been drawing quite a lot of attention and some mixed reviews from residents. But I don’t care what other people think. I just hope he stays happy and healthy.”
Last September, a vegetable hawker in his 60s became a local celebrity by donning an eccentric handmade outfit while carrying his vegetables on the way to a market in Shaoyang city, Hunan Province.
