Through incredible hard-work and perseverance, an inspiring 19-year-old student from Henan who lost both of her legs when she was still very young has managed to overcome considerable obstacles to achieve her dream of enrolling into college.
Wang Juan, born in Xinye county in Nanyang city, lost both her legs in a tragic car accident when she was just six years old. After the accident, her distraught mother took her own life by jumping into a well while her father left home and was never heard from again. When it rains, it pours.
Wang had to live with her grandparents and began training herself to use her hands and arms to complete various everyday tasks. She made it through primary school, middle school, high school and now has entered college through sheer willpower and determination.
“If I had given in earlier when facing adversity, my whole life might have ended,” Wang explains. “My grandfather told me that my family can’t help me forever, so I have to learn to help myself.”
Wang scored very well on her university entrance examination, but she was turned down by several schools due to her physical disability (wth). Fortunately, she was eventually admitted into Shangqiu College in Henan.
The college even graciously reduced Wang’s four year tuition fee and fares, provided her with an extra stipend of 400RMB each month and arranged for her to live on the first floor of one of the dorms.
“I feel so grateful to the many kind-hearted people who have helped me and to Shangqiu College for accepting me and helping me out financially,” Wang said. “But I truly don’t want to give others any more trouble. I believe that I will be able to find my own way in the world.”
When other freshman were attending compulsory military training, Wang couldn’t join in, but instead took part by helping to watch over their belongings.
“She’s very optimistic, warm-hearted and independent,” a roommate of Wang told reporters. “We college students can learn a lot from her.”
Of course, we can all learn a lot from people like Wang. Last month we reported on a 22-year-old university student who lost one of her legs and has spent the past two years training herself to become a Paralympics athlete.
Back in July last year, a woman from Sichuan who lost one of her legs was dubbed by netizens as “The Oriental Venus” because of her strength and beauty.
