These neato photographs, taken from a rooftop of a building at Wuhan University, show 9,000 undergraduate freshman students participating in mandatory military drills. Every student’s favorite time of the year.
The training is held at every university in China at the beginning of each school year to teach order and discipline to the new students. Sometime it can get a little out of hand, like say when a university chairman decides it would be a good idea to impersonate Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Freshman students are fully clad in military camouflage uniform and have to get out of bed super early in the morning—rain or shine—to participate in the mandatory training. Chinese state media say the neat rows and youthful enthusiasm not only make for a great spectacle, but also begin a vibrant university life for the freshman students.
It also prepares them well for the challenges they will likely like face while studying at university and then out in the real world.
