Do you know the difference between Mezcal and Tequila?
Both are from Mexico sure, but did you know that all tequilas are mezcal, but not all mezcals are tequila? Mezcal is the older more grown up big brother of tequila, with a long history steeped in tradition, artistry, craftsmanship and a stronger smokier taste.
Mezcal is awesome, hand-crafted stuff! Created on a farm (or “palenque”) and is overseen by a Master Mezcalero. When you see a premium mezcal, know that you are paying for a bottle of drinkable art that has been made this way since the 1600’s.
To create containers for mezcals, the natives of Southern Mexico began producing specialized vessels out of the rich, dense black clay deposits near the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. This pottery became more decorative as it evolved. Some artisans, no doubt influenced by crazy mezcal-induced antics began to fashion the containers in the shape of a monkey, an animal long associated with playful and crazy behavior in Mexico.
These unique “Monkey Bottle” mezcals can now be easily bought in China!
